Event of vets, farmers, research scientists and ecologists aims to protect UK dung beetles

First Milk is supporting a multi-disciplinary event centred on the humble dung beetle.

Estimated to be worth more than £350 million/year to UK agriculture, there’s good reason for farmers to attract this soil engineer, climate enhancer and pathogen reducer onto their farms.

The two-day event, in partnership with Yeo Valley, Farm Carbon Toolkit and leading vets, is on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 June at Yeo Valley’s Holt Farm near Blagdon, south of Bristol.

It is bringing together farmers, vets, researchers, ecologists and policy makers to stimulate action on integrating nature and farming through a combination of the latest research findings, farmer/vet case studies, workshops and two dung beetle safaris.

“Soil health is paramount in all successful farming operations with the dung beetle a powerful indicator of environmental vibrancy,” said Hannah Jones, Farm Carbon and Soil Advisor at Farm Carbon Toolkit.

Co-organiser and vet Rob Howe added: “We’re building on previous vet-focused dung fauna conferences in a really applied way. Coming together at this event gives everyone a chance to learn from each other and develop management strategies supporting dung beetle populations.”

Farming with nature to secure a sustainable future for UK food production is leading more and more livestock farmers, vets and policy makers to look at alternative ways to control pests and diseases on farm.

The conference will hear from progressive farmers working with their vets to bring about change. By adopting a new approach, they are reducing their use of veterinary medicines while benefiting animal health, soil biology and their bottom line.
