Farm Sustainability programme

From Business Management to Herd Health, and from Lameness Prevention to Good Environmental Practices, our Farm Sustainability Programme offers a wide range of industry-leading workshops, one-day courses and events for our members throughout the year.

We work with expert partners including Edinburgh Vet School and LIC to implement our Farm Sustaibaility Programme throughout the UK.  Where members can't take part in regional projects, they can take advantage of the various resources that become available, such as best practice manuals and reports.

Check back here regularly, as we continue to share the successes of our working groups.

Increasing margins through more milk from forage

In October 2014 we completed a two-year "milk from forage" project with 20 of our Campbeltown farmers.  This was focused on reducing reliance on expensive feeds, by increasing grass growth on-farm.

Following investment in farm infrastructure and applying new farming techniques, one of our farmers, Thomas Irwin of West Drumlemble Farm, has tripled his milk from grass. Coming in at an incredible 48% over the last 12 months of the project, this was almost double the UK average, and Thomas is now seeing the financial benefit of less purchased feed.

Subsequently, Thomas was recognised on a national level, having been awarded Dairy Innovator of the Year by Farmers Guardian's British Farming Awards 2014.

The project's successes were also highlighted by national agriculture magazine Farmers Weekly.  Click here to read their feature.
