First Milk: Why we are different

We are owned by British dairy farmers:

First Milk is owned by British farmers. Everything we do is geared towards securing their future and it is they who profit from our success - no-one else.

We are a diverse business:

We are a truly integrated dairy business, not to mention the Britain's biggest Cheddar cheese specialist.  One in four packs of Cheddar sold in the Britain is made by us. We are also a major producer of a variety of dairy ingredients including Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) and high value Whey Protein Concentrate, which are used in a whole range of premium food and drink products around the globe.

We have a broad international outlook:

We are constantly looking at trends in dairy across the world and planning how we can take advantage of these to the benefit of our farmers and our business.  We form long-term strategic partnerships that enable us to compete in an ever-changing global marketplace.

We are investing for the future:

We have invested £15m at our Lake District Creamery, enabling us to increase our branded cheese production, and produce Whey Protein Concentrate as part of a partnership with New Zealand based company Fonterra. We have also made investments in our North Wales cheese-packing plant - Maelor - and acquired Glenfield Dairy in Fife, Scotland, which produces soft cheese, cottage cheese and a variety of grated cheeses, extending our product portfolio as well as increase our opportunities in the foodservice and retail industries.

In May 2012, we announced the purchase of a sports nutrition business, CNP Professional. This further move into functional foods signposts a key focus area in our business strategy.

We are committed to sustainability:

It is a key priority for ethical, environmental and economic reasons. As an integrated farmer-owned business, we can ensure sustainability throughout the supply chain and our Farm Sustainability Programme offers members guidance and support to become more sustainable in their businesses as well as reduce costs
