Welsh Rugby Legends Support The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company

Welsh rugby legends, the Quinnell family, have thrown their weight behind Wales' latest hero, the Pembrokeshire Cheese Company.

British Lions and Wales hero Derek, and his international-capped sons Scott and Craig are all giving their backing to the 100% Welsh cheddar, made with 100% Welsh milk, from the award-winning Haverfordwest creamery in west Wales.
The range of premium cheddars are being marketed with the line 'Made in Wales….with pride' which equally applies to the Quinnell trio, who played for their country with pride and passion.

The trio are supporting the range of all-Welsh cheese during the four-day Royal Welsh Show (see timetable below) where they will be signing autographs, posing for photos and assisting with cheese tastings.

"All the family are passionate about our country and that goes for the food we eat too. Wherever possible, we try to support local produce and local business by buying local – but it also has to taste great too," explained Derek, who was capped for Wales 23 times and went on three British and Irish Lions tours during the 1970s and 80s.

"Cheese, and dairy products in general, have always been an important part of our diet, as the calcium helps build strong, healthy bones, which are imperative when you play a physical sport like rugby," said Scott Quinnell, who won 52 caps for Wales, scored 11 tries and captained his country on seven occasions.

"I have already tasted the full range of cheese from the Pembrokeshire Cheese Company and the quality is superb – my personal favourite is the organic. All my children love cheese as part of a healthy, balanced diet so I can guarantee my fridge will be well stocked."

And Craig Quinnell, who has 32 international caps, added: "Supporting Wales is a real passion for me so it is great to know that this 100% Welsh cheese is supporting jobs at the creamery but is also supporting our Welsh dairy farmers."

The range of premium Pembrokeshire Cheese Company cheddars are produced by around 300 dairy farmers, all based within a 35 mile radius of the Haverfordwest Creamery in Pembrokeshire.

The brand is targeting cheese lovers in Wales and the increasing consumer demand for foods with a local provenance.

Paul Rowe, general manager of the Creamery, said: "Currently only 6%* of the cheese sold in Wales is Welsh, compared with 27% of cheese sold in Scotland being Scottish. The unique climate here in west Wales means we are able to produce amazing quality cheese."

The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company is part of First Milk, the UK's largest dairy farmer co-operative, so the farmers will benefit from the success of the enterprise.

The three Welsh cheddars produced by the Pembrokeshire Cheese Company are:
Mature Welsh Cheddar
This tasty, firm bodied cheese is hand selected for its creamy, savoury flavour and delicate sweetness. Available in 200g and 400g pre-packs.
Extra Mature Welsh Cheddar
This tangy cheese is matured a little longer to give it a deliciously crumbly texture and a sweeter, yet more savoury taste. Available in 200g pre-pack and 2.5Kg deli blocks.
Mature Organic Welsh Cheddar
Made with cows' milk from organically farmed herds, this Cheddar is deliciously smooth with a creamy, slightly savoury taste with just the faintest hint of sweetness. Available in 200g pre-pack & 2.5Kg deli blocks.

The cheeses are already available throughout Wales in Spar stores and soon to be followed in Tesco and Morrisons.
