Scottish Pride, Scotland's everyday family cheddar has taken the top spot as the country's Scottish Origin* cheese brand. The move demonstrates that in the current climate, Scottish consumers will buy Scottish produce when products deliver both quality and value.
For the first time, Scottish Pride has moved up to number 1 position overtaking its competitors, according to data from retail industry experts TNS: Scotland, Scottish Origin Brands (12 weeks w/e 22 February 2009).
Produced by dairy farmer co-operative First Milk at its Rothesay creamery on the Isle of Bute, Scottish Pride is made with 100% guaranteed Scottish milk and recently moved into zip lock re-closable packaging, making it easier to use and more convenient for consumers.
Just last month, in response to the demand for lower fat products, Scottish Pride Lighter hit the supermarket shelves. Made with 100% guaranteed Scottish skimmed milk, the cheddar has the same great taste with 33% less fat. In the six weeks since its launch, sales of Scottish Pride Lighter are growing steadily through key retailers such as Morrisons, Somerfield and SPAR.
Graham Sheach, brand controller for First Milk's cheese business, said: "More Scottish households are purchasing Scottish Origin cheese than last year proving there is a growing trend for consumers buying high quality products, like Scottish Pride, which are made in Scotland with a distinct regional provenance."
*Scottish Origin Brands is defined as brands that communicate Scottish Cheddar on the packaging.
