Cumbrian MP Tony Cunningham has been on a fact-finding mission at First Milk's Lake District Creamery.
The Workington MP, whose constituency includes the creamery, visited the site to build his understanding of the business and learn more about their award-winning Lake District Cheese Company brand. He has a keen interest in the success of the creamery, which has 81 employees. First Milk also has 350 producers throughout Cumbria.Tony was welcomed to the site by First Milk's general manager, manufacturing Paul Rowe and heard details of the success of the Lake District Cheese Company brand as well as the creamery's plans for the future. He also met with the site's union representative Brian Lister during his visit.
Tony also sampled some of the award-winning cheese, which currently holds the title of the UK's Best Creamery Cheese. More than three million packs of Lake District Cheese Company cheddar has now been sold and the cheddar is found on shelves in Morrisons stores across England, the northern stores of Tesco, ASDA, Somerfield, Waitrose and Booths as well as in Cumbrian farm shops and local retailers. The cheddar has also benefited by moving into convenient re-closable zip-lock packaging.
Tony Cunningham MP, said: "I am very impressed by the way First Milk is using the fantastic cheddar produced at the creamery to create a Lake District brand, of which we should all be proud. I was delighted to learn that the Lake District cheese range is currently the fifth largest selling cheese brand in the country and we have a great opportunity to promote Cumbria's excellence in dairying to a national audience."
Paul Rowe added: "The creamery plays an important role in the economy of Cumbria and I was delighted to welcome Tony to the site to further his understanding of our business, outline our plans to develop the creamery and highlight our links within the community. As the only large scale dairy processor in Cumbria, we are putting The Lake District on the map as the leading dairy county".
The Lake District Cheese Company is owned by dairy farmer co-operative First Milk.
