First Milk's Lake District Creamery Extra Mature Cheddar has lifted the prestigious 'Best Creamery Cheese' at the British Cheese Awards.
The title tops off an incredible year for the creamery, which has notched up 48 awards across the show season.
Tony McLoughlin, general manager at the creamery, said his team were absolutely delighted at their success. "The award of Best Creamery Cheese is testament to the efforts of our team. Over 2008, we have lifted a Supreme Champion and two Reserve Champion titles, as well as 16 gold, 14 silver and 15 bronze medals – our best-ever show performance.
"Cheese shows are the shop window for our products. We know existing and potential customers take notice of who's winning these awards so it is important for the long-term success of our brand to be an award-winning cheese."
The Lake District Cheese Company brand was launched last Autumn as part of First Milk's regional provenance strategy for its cheese. Listings have already been secured in a significant number of outlets throughout Cumbria and The Lake District and the brand is just hitting the shelves in Somerfield, Tesco and ASDA, with Morrisons to follow shortly.
Regional provenance is important to consumers who want to know where their cheese is coming from – and that they are also supporting local farmers," added Mr McLoughlin. "Buying The Lake District brand means that consumers know that the milk is local and the cheese is local – and now it is the best creamery cheese in the country."
