Lake District Cheese Company Wins Gold at The Royal Highland Show

Employees at the Lake District Creamery are celebrating a gold award for their Lake District Cheese Company cheddar from this year's prestigious Royal Highland Show.

The creamery, which is owned by First Milk, the UK's largest farmer-owned co-operative, lifted the top prize in the highly prized Extra Mature category.  The team also scooped five silvers and a bronze award at the show.

Creamery manager, Andrew Pearson, said his team was absolutely delighted at the success. "Cheese shows are the shop window for our products and we know existing and potential customers take notice of who's winning the big prizes so it is great for our reputation to be known as a producer of award-winning cheese."

The creamery had already kicked off a successful 2009 cheese show season, winning a silver at last month's Devon County Show and three silvers and a bronze at the Cheshire Show last week.

The Lake District Creamery, which employs 81 staff, is in the heart of an important producer area for First Milk.  "We have 350 producers in Cumbria so it is a very tight-knit area.  Our members are delighted that they own their own creamery which is right on their doorstep, producing a high profile brand of award-winning cheddar and putting Cumbria firmly on the map as the leading dairy county.
"Regional provenance is important to consumers who want to know where their cheese is coming from – and that they are also supporting local farmers," added Mr Pearson.
