Lake District Cheese Company Launched by First Milk

First Milk, the UK's largest farmer-owned dairy business launches The Lake District Cheese Company this week. The company will market a new range of premium Cumbrian cheddar, produced at its Lake District creamery in Aspatria, Cumbria.

Using milk produced by local dairy herds grazed in the region's fertile pastures, the cheeses tap into the Lake District's rich dairy heritage and capitalise on the increasing consumer interest in regional foods.

The Lake District Creamery has been making quality cheese for more than 100 years, yet despite its location in the heart of what is arguably Britain's finest milk producing region, this is the first time it has ever produced cheeses bearing the Lake District name.

Jeff Halliwell, Managing Director of First Milk's cheese business says: "No-one has ever produced a cheese that communicates fully the heritage and qualities of Cumbria and the Lake District – until now. And because only local milk is used, we know the names of all of the farmers who supply us - to the extent that we feature three of them on pack."

The range comprises:

Mature Cumbrian Cheddar

A classic, firm textured mature Cheddar, hand selected at peak maturity for its robust, savoury flavour.

Extra Mature Cumbrian Cheddar

This strong, tangy Extra Mature Cheddar is matured for a minimum of 14 months and hand selected for its deliciously rich depth of flavour.

The Cumbrian Smokey

A smooth textured Cheddar, hand selected and smoked over chipped oak to give it a deliciously 'smokey' flavour.

The range is available in the following sizes and variants:

Mature Cumbrian Cheddar 200g
Extra Mature Cumbrian Cheddar 200g
Mature Cumbrian Cheddar 400g
Extra Mature Cumbrian Cheddar 400g
Extra Mature Cumbrian Cheddar Deli Block 2.5kg
The Cumbrian Smokey Deli Block 2.5kg
Extra Mature Cumbrian Cheddar (waxed truckle) 250g

To build consumer association with the new brand's heritage distribution will initially be focused on specialist outlets in Cumbria and the Northwest.
