Isle of Bute Cheddar Wins Gold at the Royal Highland Show

Employees at the Rothesay Creamery are celebrating a gold award for their Isle of Bute Mature traditional cheddar from this year's prestigious Royal Highland Show.

The creamery, which is owned by First Milk, the UK's largest farmer-owned co-operative, also scooped four silvers and two bronze awards at the show.

Creamery manager, Alex Home, said his team was absolutely delighted at the success. "Cheese shows are the shop window for our products and we know existing and potential customers take notice of who's winning the big prizes so it is great for our reputation to be known as a producer of award-winning cheese."

The creamery had already kicked off a successful 2009 cheese show season, winning a bronze at the Bath & West Show last month.

The Rothesay Creamery, which employs 17 staff, is in the heart of an important producer area for First Milk.  "We have 15 producers on the island and one on the Cowal peninsula so it is a very tight-knit area.  Our members are delighted that they own their own creamery which is right on their doorstep which produces 100% Scottish cheddar using only 100% Scottish milk."

As well as creating the award-winning Isle of Bute cheddar, the creamery also supplies a number of the key retailers in the UK with private label cheese.

"Regional provenance is important to consumers who want to know where their cheese is coming from – and that they are also supporting local farmers," added Mr Home.

"Buying the Isle of Bute brand means that consumers can trust that the milk is local and the cheese is guaranteed 100% Scottish."
