Isle of Arran Creamery Welcomes New Site Manager
The First Milk Cheese Company's Isle of Arran Creamery has a new manager, following the retirement of existing boss Jack Phillips.
Alex Home is taking charge of the creamery having spent his career in the dairy industry, including the last 13 years with Lactalis in Stranraer.
"Becoming manager at Arran gives me the chance to work closely with the team and drive forward the creamery," explained Alex. "At the same time, I am delighted to be returning to a more traditional and hands-on way of making cheese, which is both a skill and an art.
Jack Phillips has been manager at Torrylinn for the last six years, though he has clocked up more than 40 years in the dairy industry. After ensuring a smooth handover at the creamery, Jack is looking forward to playing more bowls and becoming more involved in junior football in his retirement.
"I have had an incredible career in dairying and have seen the industry endure both good times and bad. I have particularly enjoyed these last few years in Arran living from Monday to Friday within the community and striking up strong working relationships," said Jack.
Jeff Halliwell, Managing Director of The First Milk Cheese Company, added: "I'd like to welcome Alex to the First Milk family and at the same time, thank Jack for his excellent service to the business and wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement.
"We have lots of opportunities with our Torrylinn creamery and the 'Isle of Arran' brand and we will be looking to maximise those to deliver consumers high quality cheese with true regional provenance."
The Isle of Arran Creamery produces the award-winning Isle of Arran Medium Scottish Coloured Dunlop cheese by hand, in open vats using time-honoured methods passed down through generations of cheese makers.
The creamery at Torrylinn celebrated its diamond jubilee last year. Constructed in 1946, the building was officially opened by King George VI in 1947.
