Haverfordwest Creamery Enjoys Vintage Awards Year

First Milk's Haverfordwest Creamery has enjoyed its best ever year for cheese awards.

The creamery, which is home to The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company range of cheddars, has scooped an impressive 59 awards across the 2008 agricultural shows.
The west Wales creamery won two golds at the recent British Cheese Awards in Cardiff, which are the annual celebration of the very best of the British cheese industry. This gave the creamery a final awards tally for 2008 of 13 gold, 20 silver and 26 bronze awards. Earlier this year, Haverfordwest also won The Grocer magazine's prestigious Own Label Excellence Award in the traditional cheese category.

And there may still be further competition success ahead as the creamery is a finalist in both the True Taste of Wales Awards and The Food Manufacturer Excellence Awards, both of which are announced next month.

Paul Rowe, General Manager at the creamery, said his team were delighted at their success. "Cheese shows are the shop window for our products. We know existing and potential customers take notice of who's winning these awards, so it is important for the long term success of our brand and our creamery to be known as a producer of award-winning cheese."

The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company range of cheddars was launched in the summer, as part of First Milk's regional provenance strategy for its cheese. Listings have already been secured in a significant number of outlets throughout Wales, including the key distributer Cheeses from Wales.

The Mature, Extra Mature and Mature Organic cheese is now on shelves in Somerfield, Tesco and ASDA with Morrisons and Waitrose soon to follow. Plans are also being well advanced to extend the brand beyond Welsh stores into England.

"Regional provenance is important to consumers who want to know where their cheese is coming from – and that they are also supporting local farmers," added Mr Rowe. "Buying The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company brand means that consumers know that the milk is local and the cheese is local – and it is also a major award-winning cheese."
