Haverfordwest Cheese Lifts Gold Award at Royal Highland Show

Employees at the Haverfordwest creamery in West Wales are celebrating a gold award from this year's prestigious Royal Highland Show for their Organic Mild cheese.

The creamery, owned by First Milk, the UK's largest farmer-owned co-operative, also scooped two silver awards and three bronze trophies at the Edinburgh show.
And that brings the creamery's awards haul for the show season so far to one gold, four silver and eight bronze prizes.

The creamery's awards success comes on top of the highly successful launch of The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company brand earlier this month.

Paul Rowe, General Manager at the creamery, said his 67-strong team were absolutely delighted at their success, particularly with their organic cheese. "We only began making organic cheese at Haverfordwest a year ago and we are already winning awards for its superb taste.

"Cheese shows are the shop window for our products and we know existing and potential customers take notice of who's winning the big prizes so it is great for our reputation to be known as a producer of award-winning cheese," he added.

The Haverfordwest Creamery supplies a number of the key retailers in the UK with private label cheese. Just two weeks ago, the creamery also began marketing its own brand of cheese under The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company title, including an organic mature cheddar.

"The response to The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company has been phenomenal. We already have listings in Spar stores throughout Wales and we have been talking to a number of specialist local retailers who also want to stock the cheese. We are now looking to achieve listings for the brand in the Welsh and English stores of the major retailers and we hope to move that forward in the next few weeks.

"Regional provenance is important to consumers who want to know where their cheese is coming from – and that they are also supporting local farmers," added Mr Rowe.

"Buying The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company brand means that consumers know that the milk is local and the cheese is local – and now it is also award-winning cheese."
