Following on from our meeting at the House of Commons, delegations from First Milk have also been talking about the dairy industry with Assembly Members in Cardiff and MSPs at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh over the last few weeks.
Peter Humphreys and Jeff Halliwell both made presentations to the Welsh Assembly Members. Peter highlighted the importance of creating a sustainable dairy industry for the future and outlined some of the high costs which members are facing on-farm at present. Jeff explained the significance of our Welsh creamery at Haverfordwest to our members and talked about the commercial and economic benefits of launching our own Welsh brand, The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company.
Support from the Assembly Members was very positive. Member for Preseli Pembrokeshire, Paul Davies, said: “First Milk not only supports a significant number of jobs in Pembrokeshire but also a substantial number of dairy farmers in the county and indeed, throughout west Wales.
“The event highlighted the importance of the dairy industry to our county and it’s wonderful that First Milk has created The Pembrokeshire Cheese Company – it’s delicious and it is also a great advert for our county.”
Meanwhile in Edinburgh, Robert Shearlaw, Tom Campbell and Paul Flanagan represented the business at a reception for MSPs at the Scottish Parliament.
“We made some good contacts and heightened our profile with this important audience, while highlighting the steps required to ensure sustainability of dairy farming in Scotland,” said Robert Shearlaw.
