First Milk Academy:

Raising standards in the dairy sector

Unique in the dairy industry, the First Milk Academy encourages First Milk members to benchmark key areas of their farms’ performance and employ appropriate techniques to make improvements where required.

First Milk Academy Business Clubs provide a forum for members to share best practice and focus on the issues that concern them most

There can often be significant differences in profitability between farms of equivalent sizes so sharing benchmarking data and best practice among other farmers will often provide the best solutions.

First Milk Academy Business Clubs provide a forum for members to share best practice and focus on the issues that concern them most. These clubs, delivered with the assistance of the Milk Development Council, provide guidance, facilitation and logistical help to members.

Currently, there are 30 Academy Business Clubs (ABCs) across the country bringing farmers together to problem solve and share expertise on diverse issues which help them achieve greater efficiencies around their farm.

More formal professional development is provided by The Royal Agricultural College, Scottish Agricultural Colleges and Gelli Aur in Wales who are working together on a series of professional development workshops.
