The launch of The Lake District Cheese Company last month has been a huge success and the reaction from local retailers and consumers has been phenomenal.
More than 250 members, local business people and VIPs attended the Rheged Centre event where the highlight of the evening was a tutor session from our chief cheese grader, Terry Hudson (below) in how to truly taste and appreciate our Lake District cheeses.
Cumbrian farmer Robert Martin of Gaitsgill Farm, Carlisle, was thrilled at the buzz around the event: “There was an amazing atmosphere that night. Our members have waited so long for our own brand and now it is finally here. The cheese tastes great, the marketing is superb and we believe we are on to a real winner.”
Claire Hensman, the High Sheriff of Cumbria, was equally complementary. “I am sure that you will attract a loyal local customer base if you can convey the message that you are being supplied by Cumbrian farmers who are also seen to have some input into the decision making processes. I wish you every success.”
Within just a matter of weeks, the cheese was available in more than 500 outlets around the county. Director of North Lakes Foods, and a former First Milk employee, Stuart Martin, added: “I believe The Lake District Cheese Company will be a massive success. Consumers want to know about the provenance of their food these days and it is great to see local cheese being made and sold using local milk.” A full list of stockists is available on the website: www.lakedistrictcheesecompany.co.uk .
