Stewart Jamieson has been elected as the new Local Representative for Dumfries and the surrounding area.
Stewart is a well-respected figure in the UK dairy industry and has a background steeped in dairy farming. After completing his agriculture degree at Glasgow University and then a post-grad degree at The Grassland Research Institute, Stewart returned to the family farm at Kirkland, Thornhill in Dumfries-shire in 1975, where he has been dairy farming for the last 30 years.
Some six years ago, the family made a decision to move into organic milk production and the farm has been fully organic since 2003. Stewart currently farms 180ha with a herd of 218 cows and average milk sales of over 8,000 litres.
Stewart was a member of Scottish Milk and remained with the co-operative when it became First Milk in 2001 and is a keen advocate of the co-operative movement.
He is a director of agricultural and rural affairs consultancy CARA where he has a particular interest in providing advice on tenancy and dairy farming. Stewart has recently completed a three year term as Chairman of the Scottish Organic Milk Producers and is due to become a Board member of DairyCo (the successor organisation to the Milk Development Council) in April 2008.
Stewart is in partnership with his wife Frances and has three daughters, all of whom enjoy careers away from the farm. In his spare time, Stewart enjoys playing golf and supporting the Scotland football team.
Stewart is very much looking forward to his new role as a Local Representative: “I have always been a firm believer of the principles of a co-operative and I hope to serve my members well and represent their views appropriately. Today’s dairy industry is a fast-changing business and I believe that First Milk has the ambition to be the dynamic, driving force in the market going forward.”
