| Humphreys Speaks at Global Dairy Conference |
|
Our chief executive, Peter Humphreys is speaking at the Dairy Industry Newsletter conference on 10 April along with senior executives from dairy companies in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Germany, Ireland, and the UK. The theme of the conference is ‘Markets – what next?’ Peter explained: “The profile of First Milk is at a level where we get a number of requests to speak at national and international conferences. It is important to be selective in the invitations we accept, but I was happy to agree to speak at the Dairy Industry Newsletter conference as it is widely regarded as the no.1 global dairy conference.“It provides a good opportunity to hear at first hand what is happening in other markets around the globe and spot trends that will be useful in the development of our business. “My speech will focus on three main points. Firstly, I will talk about why an integrated farmer owned business is the best solution for retailers. There are many common challenges out there for retailers and dairy farmers. Issues like cost inflation, environmental legislation, animal welfare, and demands for products with heritage and provenance. It is much more efficient for farmer owned businesses and retailers to tackle them together and form close partnerships. “Secondly, further consolidation is required in Britain if we are to compete internationally. As individual dairy companies in Britain, we don’t have the size and scale to compete on a European, never mind a world stage. Other dairy companies are ahead of us because their location made it natural for them to look outside their own borders, or they were forced to look overseas due to geography. However, there are still lots of opportunities out there if we target the right markets with the right products. “Thirdly, I will use the findings of our Promar report to point out that a strong dairy industry can only be achieved by paying producers a sustainable price that allows them to cover their costs and make a reasonable profit” A report on the conference will be provided in the May newsletter. |
